Expanding the frontiers: New opportunities in Horizon projects

Horizon projects represent an important way for international cooperation, particularly between regions such as the Mediterranean and Canada. These EU-funded initiatives focus on research and innovation, with the aim of addressing global challenges through joint efforts. An important milestone is the announcement made on 3 July 2024 by the European Commission that Canada has officially joined Horizon Europe, the European Union’s largest research and innovation programme. This joining now allows Canadian entities to participate in collaborative research projects, on an equal basis with their European counterparts, within Pillar II of the programme, which focuses on common global challenges such as climate change, energy, the digital economy and health. This marks a significant opportunity for Mediterranean SMEs to form consortia with some of the world’s best research organisations, directly benefiting from the programme’s funding.
